What Instruments Are Used in Throat and Vocal Cord Surgery?
Microlaryngeal surgery is done through a rigid laryngoscope, so every instrument is long, thin and angled to keep the surgeon's hand and the instrument shaft out of the sight line. Why Is a Round Blade Used Instead of a Straight One?
A straight blade only cuts where its edge is pointed, so if the shaft rotates even slightly inside the laryngoscope, the incision drifts off line. A round blade cuts along its whole rim — the direction of the shaft no longer decides the direction of the cut. In an airway where the surgeon is working through a tube with limited wrist movement, that removes the main source of error.
