Politzer Tympanum (Paracentesis) Needles
A Politzer tympanum needle, also called a paracentesis needle, has a small, sharp point made to open the eardrum. The surgeon makes a small, controlled opening (paracentesis or myringotomy) so fluid or pus can drain from the middle ear.
Healermed makes six Politzer needles: the standard 17.5cm needle, the 16cm furuncle knife, angled needles with a spear or lancet point (15.5cm and 16cm), and 18cm Lucae bayonet needles with a spear or lancet point. A spear point is narrow and makes a small, neat puncture; a lancet point is a little broader and opens a slightly longer cut in one movement. All are long enough to work through an ear speculum with the hand well back from the ear.
- Politzer Micro Ear Needle, 17.5cm — This is the standard Politzer tympanum needle: 17.5cm long with a straight shaft and a fine sharp point.
- Politzer Furuncle Knife Micro Ear Needle, 16cm — This Politzer pattern has a small knife-shaped point instead of a needle point.
- Angled Spear Shaped Politzer Micro Ear Needle, 15.5cm — The shaft is angled and the point is spear-shaped.
- Angled Lancet Shaped Politzer Micro Ear Needle, 16cm — The shaft is angled and the point is lancet-shaped.
- Lucae Bayonet Spear Shaped Politzer Micro Ear Needle, 18cm — A Lucae bayonet shaft with a spear-shaped point, also known as a Politzer-Lucae needle.
- Lucae Bayonet Lancet Shaped Politzer Micro Ear Needle, 18cm — A Lucae bayonet shaft with a lancet-shaped point.
Barbara Micro Ear Needles
Barbara micro ear needles are fine, pointed instruments for middle ear microsurgery. They move, lift and position very small things under the microscope: grafts, pieces of tissue, gelatin sponge and small prostheses.
Barbara needles are also used to separate fine adhesions and to test how freely the small bones of hearing move. Healermed makes five Barbara needles: straight, 45 degree angled tip and 45 degree curved tip at 16cm, and 45 degree angled and 45 degree S-shaped at 15.5cm. The shape of the working end decides where the point can reach.
- Barbara Straight Micro Ear Needle, 16cm — The straight Barbara needle has a straight shaft and a straight fine point, for work directly in line with the view.
- Barbara 45 Degree Angled Tip Micro Ear Needle, 16cm — Only the tip is angled, at 45 degrees.
- Barbara 45 Degree Curved Tip Micro Ear Needle, 16cm — The tip curves smoothly through 45 degrees.
- Barbara 45 Degree Angled Micro Ear Needle, 15.5cm — This is the 15.5cm Barbara needle with a 45 degree angled working end.
- Barbara 45 Degree S Shape Curved Micro Ear Needle, 15.5cm — The working end follows an S-shaped double curve that ends at 45 degrees.
Rosen Micro Ear Needle
The Rosen micro ear needle is a fine pointed instrument for middle ear microsurgery, with a tip curved through 45 degrees.
The curved tip reaches around edges and under tissue, so it is used to separate fine tissue and adhesions, lift small flaps and test ossicle movement where a straight point cannot reach.
- Rosen 45 Degree Curved Tip Micro Ear Needle, 16cm — The Rosen needle has a tip curved through 45 degrees, for separating fine tissue and reaching around edges in the middle ear.

Care and Sterilization
Needle points are very fine and bend easily. Use them on soft tissue only, never on bone or wire, and store each needle with its point in a tip guard. Check the point under magnification at every cycle; a bent or blunt point should be repaired or replaced. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
