What Are Otology Instruments?
Otology instruments are the instruments used to examine, test and operate on the ear. In the clinic they include ear speculums, tuning forks, ear syringes and wax hooks. In the operating room, ear surgery instruments are fine micro instruments — forceps, scissors, knives, needles and hooks — used under the operating microscope through the narrow ear canal, where the working space is only a few millimetres wide.
Because the surgeon works through a speculum and a microscope, micro ear instruments have long, slim shafts, offset or bayonet handles that keep the hand out of the line of sight, and very small tips, often under 1mm. The tip must be exact and the finish must not glare under the microscope light.

Tympanoplasty and Myringoplasty Instruments
Tympanoplasty repairs a hole in the eardrum, often with a graft of temporalis fascia. The surgeon first cuts the canal skin with micro ear knives such as the sickle and round knife, then lifts the tympanomeatal flap with micro ear needles and micro ear dissectors. Micro ear forceps with smooth or serrated jaws hold and place the graft, and micro ear cup forceps remove granulation tissue and take biopsies. Fine cutting is done with Bellucci micro ear scissors and Wullstein micro ear scissors, and micro ear hooks such as the Shambaugh and Schuknecht hooks work around the ossicles.
Stapes Surgery (Stapedotomy) Instruments
Stapes surgery restores hearing when the stapes bone is fixed by otosclerosis. The distance from the incus to the footplate is measured with the House measuring rods in our stapes instruments range. Micro ear nippers (House-Dieter malleus nippers) cut bone and the stapes arch, and Shea-Bellucci micro ear scissors cut the stapedius tendon. The prosthesis wire is shaped with McGee wire bending forceps and placed with the Fuller prosthesis introducing forceps.
Mastoid Surgery (Mastoidectomy) Instruments
Mastoid surgery opens the mastoid bone behind the ear, for example to remove infection or cholesteatoma. The soft tissue and periosteum are lifted with the Lempert elevator from our periosteal elevators, bone is removed in controlled bites with Citelli and Beyer ear mastoid rongeurs, and bone dust and diseased tissue are cleared with House, Buck and Lempert instruments from our micro ear curettes and scoops.
Ear Examination Instruments
Micro ear speculums open and straighten the ear canal for otoscopy, microscope examination and ear surgery. Hartmann, Toynbee, Farrior and Zoellner patterns are made in several lengths and diameters, with matte, chrome and black anti-glare finishes.
Hearing Test Instruments
Ear tuning forks are used for the Rinne and Weber hearing tests, which tell conductive from sensorineural hearing loss. The 512 Hz fork is the standard for these tests; 128 Hz forks and the Rydel-Seiffer fork test vibration sense.
Eustachian Tube Instruments
Ear catheters such as the Hartmann Eustachian catheter are passed through the nose to inflate the middle ear and test whether the Eustachian tube is open.
Ear Wax and Foreign Body Removal Instruments
Ear wax is removed with Billeau micro ear loops, cerumen hooks and ear syringes for irrigation, such as the Schimmelbusch ear syringe. Objects stuck in the ear canal are taken out with Hartmann alligator ear forceps, Moldenhauer and Zaufal levers from our foreign body instruments, and Quire and Buck foreign body levers.

How to Choose Ear Surgery Instruments
- Working length: micro ear forceps and scissors are about 8–9cm long; knives, needles and hooks are about 14–18cm. Choose the length that suits your speculum and microscope distance.
- Angle and direction: straight, bent up, right and left patterns reach different parts of the middle ear. A basic set has all four.
- Tip size: smaller tips (0.6mm) suit fine work and narrow canals; larger tips (0.8–1mm) give a firmer hold.
- Jaw type: smooth jaws for grafts, serrated jaws for grip, cup jaws for biopsy, cutting jaws for clean cuts.
- Finish: a matte or black anti-glare finish reduces reflection under the microscope light.
- Material: German stainless steel keeps a fine tip sharp and resists corrosion through repeated autoclaving.
- Sets: buying a complete otology or tympanoplasty set keeps patterns matched and saves cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are otology instruments?
Otology instruments are the instruments used to examine, test and operate on the ear, from ear speculums and tuning forks in the clinic to micro ear forceps, scissors, knives and hooks used under the microscope.
What is the difference between otology instruments and ear surgery instruments?
Otology instruments is the medical term and covers examination and hearing test instruments too. Ear surgery instruments usually means the micro instruments used in the operating room.
Which instruments are in a basic tympanoplasty set?
A typical set has micro ear forceps (straight, up, right and left), cup forceps, Bellucci scissors, a sickle knife and a round knife, a Rosen needle, Shambaugh hooks and ear speculums. We can build a set to your list.
Which instruments are used in stapes surgery?
House measuring rods, malleus nippers, Shea-Bellucci scissors, McGee wire bending forceps, the Fuller prosthesis introducing forceps, and fine needles and hooks.
Which tuning fork is used for the Rinne and Weber tests?
The 512 Hz tuning fork is the standard. 256 Hz is also used, and 128 Hz forks test vibration sense.
Are these instruments autoclavable?
Yes. The surgical instruments are German stainless steel and can be steam autoclaved at up to 134°C. Tuning forks and ear syringes are cleaned and disinfected instead; each page gives the care steps.
Can I order a complete otology set?
Yes. Send your list of model codes through the wholesale request page and we quote the complete set.
What is the minimum order quantity for bulk orders?
The minimum order is agreed per order, not fixed. Send the model codes and quantities you need through the wholesale request page and we confirm the minimum for that order.
Do you provide samples?
Yes. Samples are available on request and the buyer pays the shipping. Tell us the model codes you want to check.
Can I order a custom size?
Yes. Other tip lengths, tip widths and working lengths can be made on request. Send your specification through the wholesale request page and our production team will confirm.
