Nasal Dressing, Bayonet, Polypus and Rhinoplasty Forceps
What Are Nasal Forceps?
Nasal forceps are long, slim forceps used inside the nose. Nasal dressing forceps place and remove packing and dressings; bayonet forceps have an offset shaft so the hand does not block the view through the nasal speculum; polypus forceps remove nasal polyps; and fine rhinoplasty forceps hold skin, cartilage and the columella during nose surgery.

Nasal Dressing Forceps: Gruenwald-Jansen, Troeltsch, Westmacott, Lubet-Barbon, Tilley
Nasal dressing forceps have long, slim jaws that place and remove nasal packing, gauze strips, dressings and splints deep inside the nose.
Bayonet and angled shafts keep the hand out of the line of sight, so the surgeon can see the jaws through the nasal speculum. The serrated jaws hold gauze and packing firmly without tearing it.
They are used after septoplasty, rhinoplasty and sinus surgery, to treat nosebleeds and to remove crusts and foreign bodies in the clinic.
- Gruenwald-Jansen Bayonet Nasal Dressing Forceps 21.5cm
- Troeltsch Nasal Dressing Forceps — 14.5cm, 15cm, 15.5cm, 18cm
- Westmacott Nasal Dressing Forceps 20cm
- Lubet-Barbon Nasal Dressing Forceps 18.5cm
- Tilley Nasal Dressing Forceps 16.5cm
Nasal Tissue and Polypus Forceps
Nasal tissue and polypus forceps grip tissue firmly: toothed jaws hold mucosa and cartilage without slipping, and polypus forceps grasp and remove nasal polyps.
The Gruenwald-Jansen 1x2 teeth forceps has a bayonet shaft and toothed jaws for holding mucosa and cartilage in septal surgery. The Hartmann polypus forceps has ring handles and grasping jaws for removing nasal polyps and tissue.
- Gruenwald-Jansen Bayonet Nasal Forceps 1x2 Teeth 16cm
- Hartmann Nasal Polypus Forceps 18.5cm
Rhinoplasty Forceps: Ogura and Cottle
Rhinoplasty forceps are fine forceps for open and closed nose surgery: they hold the skin, cartilage and columella precisely while the surgeon cuts and shapes.
The Ogura skin grasping forceps holds skin edges with a 4mm grip. The Cottle fixation forceps has fine 1.7mm toothed and serrated tips for cartilage and skin. The Cottle columella forceps has wide 12mm jaws that hold the columella steady.
- Ogura Skin Grasping Forceps 11cm, 4mm
- Cottle Fixation Forceps, Toothed and Serrated, 14cm, 1.7mm
- Cottle Columella Forceps 12mm

Care and Sterilization
Clean the forceps straight after use, before blood and mucus dry on the jaws. Open the jaws, brush the serrations, teeth and joint, rinse and dry. An ultrasonic cleaner can be used. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint, then steam autoclave at up to 134°C. Check that the jaws close evenly and the teeth meet before each use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are nasal dressing forceps used for?
To place and remove nasal packing, gauze, dressings and splints, for example after septoplasty or to stop a nosebleed.
What is a bayonet nasal forceps?
A forceps with an offset, bayonet-shaped shaft, so the hand stays out of the line of sight while the jaws work through a nasal speculum. Tilley and Gruenwald-Jansen forceps are bayonet patterns.
What is the difference between Tilley and Gruenwald-Jansen forceps?
Both are bayonet nasal forceps. The Tilley is the classic 16.5cm dressing forceps; the Gruenwald-Jansen is made at 21.5cm for deep packing and with 1x2 teeth at 16cm for holding tissue.
Which forceps are used in rhinoplasty?
Fine forceps such as the Ogura skin grasping forceps, the Cottle fixation forceps and the Cottle columella forceps.
Are these nasal forceps autoclavable?
Yes. All are German stainless steel and can be steam autoclaved at up to 134°C.
