House Measuring Rods
The House measuring rod is a fine stapes surgery instrument for measuring the distance between the incus and the stapes footplate, so the surgeon can choose a stapes prosthesis of the right length.
Each rod has a measuring tip of a set length: 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 or 5.0mm. These match the common stapes prosthesis lengths. The surgeon checks which length fits the gap and chooses the prosthesis to match.
Most surgeons keep the full set of four lengths, because the right size is only known during the operation.

Care and Sterilization
The working ends are fine and should be used only for their own job, never to lever or force. Clean straight after use, dry fully, and store each instrument with its tip protected. Check the tip at every cycle. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
