How a Cup Forceps Works

Each jaw is shaped like a tiny spoon. When the jaws close, the two cups meet edge to edge and form a small closed hollow. Tissue caught between them is held inside the hollow instead of being squeezed flat, so a biopsy sample keeps its shape and loose pieces come out in one go rather than falling back into the ear.

That is the difference from a standard micro ear forceps: a grasping forceps holds, a cup forceps collects. For holding and lifting, see the Micro Ear Forceps range.

Why Bent Right

The shaft runs down the ear canal and the cups turn to the right at the end, for side access in the canal and middle ear. Which side is front or back depends on which ear is being operated on, so bent right and bent left are normally bought as a pair.

The same 4 x 1mm cup is also made straight (HM-CF-S40-10), bent up (HM-CF-UP40-10), bent left (HM-CF-L40-10).

Why a 4 x 1mm Cup

The 4mm x 1mm cup, 0.9mm high, is the larger of the two sizes. It holds more tissue per bite, which makes clearing granulation tissue and cholesteatoma fragments faster, and gives a bigger biopsy sample.

The bent right cup forceps is also made as the 3.5mm x 0.6mm cup (HM-CF-R35-06).

How to Choose the Direction

  • Straight — work in line with the view: biopsy and tissue removal straight down the ear canal
  • Bent Up — reaching tissue above the line of view, toward the attic
  • Bent Right — side access to the right in the ear canal and middle ear (used as a pair with the left)
  • Bent Left — side access to the left in the ear canal and middle ear (used as a pair with the right)

Care and Sterilization

Close the cups gently and never use them on bone or wire, or the cup edges will stop meeting cleanly. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
