Cup size = cup length x cup width (4 x 1mm cup is 0.9mm high, 3.5 x 0.6mm cup is 0.5mm high). All have an 8cm working length. Each one is its own listing with its own model code.

How a Cup Forceps Works

Each jaw is shaped like a tiny spoon. When the jaws close, the two cups meet edge to edge and form a small closed hollow. Tissue caught between them is held inside the hollow instead of being squeezed flat, so a biopsy sample keeps its shape and loose pieces come out in one go rather than falling back into the ear.

Why Straight

A straight cup forceps is the everyday choice. It works directly ahead of the shaft, in line with the microscope, for biopsies and for clearing tissue you can see straight down the canal. If you buy one cup forceps, start with the straight.

The same 3.5 x 0.6mm cup is also made bent up (HM-CF-UP35-06), bent right (HM-CF-R35-06), bent left (HM-CF-L35-06).

Why a 3.5 x 0.6mm Cup

The 3.5mm x 0.6mm cup, 0.5mm high, is the finer of the two sizes. It takes very small bites for precise work close to the ossicles, in narrow spaces, and where only a tiny sample is needed.

How to Choose the Direction

  • Straight — work in line with the view: biopsy and tissue removal straight down the ear canal
  • Bent Up — reaching tissue above the line of view, toward the attic
  • Bent Right — side access to the right in the ear canal and middle ear (used as a pair with the left)
  • Bent Left — side access to the left in the ear canal and middle ear (used as a pair with the right)

Care and Sterilization

Close the cups gently and never use them on bone or wire, or the cup edges will stop meeting cleanly. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
