What a Prosthesis Introducing Forceps Does

A middle ear prosthesis is very small and light. It has to be picked up, carried down the ear canal and set in exactly the right place without being dropped or bent. A standard grasping forceps can twist or pinch it; an introducing forceps is made to hold it steadily and let it go cleanly.

In stapes surgery the forceps places the piston into the small opening made in the footplate, with the wire loop over the incus. The loop is then closed with a McGee wire bending forceps.

Why a 7mm Tip

The 7mm tip gives a long, stable hold on the prosthesis while the 8cm working length reaches the middle ear through the ear canal. This forceps is made in one standard size. Other tip lengths can be made on request.

Care and Sterilization

Close the tip gently on the prosthesis — it is made to hold, not squeeze. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
