Ear Scoops: Lempert, Jansen, Barth and Gross

Ear scoops have a small spoon-shaped working end for scooping out tissue, granulation, bone dust and debris.

The Lempert sharp scoop (21.5cm, eight sizes from 1.5 to 3.6mm) and the Barth sharp scoop (18cm) remove granulation tissue and debris in the mastoid cavity. The Jansen curved scoop is double ended, 2.5mm and 3mm. The Gross instrument has a scoop on one end and a hook on the other, for removing earwax and foreign bodies.

A sharp edge cuts and lifts tissue cleanly; the scoop shape then holds it as it is removed.

House Double Ended Micro Ear Curettes

House micro ear curettes are double ended micro curettes with a small sharp cup on each end, for middle ear surgery under the microscope.

The sharp cups remove small amounts of bone and tissue, for example from the edge of the ear canal (scutum) to see the ossicles, and around the stapes. Each end has a different cup size, so one instrument gives two sizes.

Healermed makes six size pairs, from 1.0 x 1.2mm to 2.8 x 3.5mm. Most surgeons keep a small, a medium and a large pair.

Buck Micro Ear Curettes

Buck ear curettes are ear curettes with a small round cup for removing earwax (cerumen) and debris from the ear canal.

The sharp versions cut through hard, stuck wax; the blunt versions are gentler on the ear canal skin. The straight shaft works in line with the view; the curved shaft reaches around the bend of the ear canal.

Each is made in five cup sizes, from 1.5 to 4.0mm. Smaller cups suit narrow canals and children.

Weber-Loch, Shapleigh and Langenbeck Ear Curettes

Ear curettes are used to remove earwax, debris and small foreign bodies from the ear canal.

The Weber-Loch curette (17cm) is made for removing foreign bodies and wax. The Shapleigh curette (15cm, 1.5 and 2.0mm) has a small loop for wax and debris. The Langenbeck curette (13cm) has a blunt tip that is gentle on the canal skin.

Care and Sterilization

The working ends are fine and should be used only for their own job, never to lever or force. Clean straight after use, dry fully, and store each instrument with its tip protected. Check the tip at every cycle. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
