How a Cup Forceps Works
Each jaw is shaped like a tiny spoon. When they close, the cups meet edge to edge and hold the tissue inside a small hollow instead of squeezing it flat. Choosing the Direction
- Straight — The shaft and cups are straight, so the cup works in line with your view down the ear canal.
- Bent Up — The cups are bent upward, so they reach tissue above the line of the shaft while your view stays clear.
- Bent Right — The cups are bent to the right, so they reach tissue to the right of the shaft without moving the instrument across the view.
- Bent Left — The cups are bent to the left, so they reach tissue to the left of the shaft without moving the instrument across the view.
Bent right and bent left are mirror images and are normally bought as a pair.
Choosing the Cup Size
- 4 x 1mm cup, 0.9mm high — bigger bites, faster clearing, larger samples
- 3.5 x 0.6mm cup, 0.5mm high — fine, precise bites near the ossicles and in narrow spaces
The model code tells you both: HM-CF-UP35-06 is bent up, 3.5mm cup length, 0.6mm cup width.

Care and Sterilization
Close the cups gently and never use them on bone or wire, or the cup edges will stop meeting cleanly. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
