Choosing the Jaw Type
- Straight Smooth — Smooth jaws have no teeth, so they hold soft, thin material without piercing or tearing it.
- Straight Serrated — Serrated jaws have fine cross teeth, so small pieces of tissue do not slip out while you pull or lift.
- Bent Up Serrated — The jaws are bent upward, so the tip works above the line of the shaft while your view down the ear canal stays clear.
- Angled Right Serrated — The jaws are angled to the right, so the tip reaches areas to the right of the shaft without moving the whole instrument across the view.
- Angled Left Serrated — The jaws are angled to the left, so the tip reaches areas to the left of the shaft without moving the whole instrument across the view.
Smooth jaws are for grafts that must not be marked; serrated jaws are for holding and pulling. Right and left are mirror images and are normally bought as a pair.
Choosing the Tip Size
- 4 x 0.8mm — the largest and strongest tip in the range
- 4 x 0.6mm — the same reach with a narrower jaw
- 3.5 x 0.6mm — the shortest and finest tip in the range
Tip size is tip length x tip width. A longer, wider tip grips more; a shorter, narrower tip gives more control in the tightest spaces. The model code tells you both: HM-EF-SS40-08 is straight serrated, 4.0mm long, 0.8mm wide.

Care and Sterilization
Micro forceps tips are fine and bend easily. Use them on soft tissue only — never on wire, bone or needles. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
