What the Bent Up Serrated Jaw Does

The shaft runs straight down the ear canal and the jaws turn upward at the end. This lets the tip reach areas that sit above the straight line of view, where a straight forceps would need to be tilted and would then block the microscope.

It is used to reach up toward the attic and under overhanging bone, to lift tissue from the upper part of the middle ear, and to work around the curve of the ear canal. The jaws are serrated, so tissue stays held while you pull it back into view.

Most surgeons keep a bent up forceps next to a straight one: the straight for work in line with the view, the bent up for anything above it.

Why a 4 x 0.8mm Tip

A 4mm long, 0.8mm wide tip is the general-purpose size. The wider jaw gives the most grip surface of the three sizes, so it holds larger pieces and resists twisting. Choose it as your first forceps if you are buying one size only.

The same bent up serrated jaw is also made as 4mm x 0.6mm (HM-EF-UP40-06) and 3.5mm x 0.6mm (HM-EF-UP35-06). Many surgeons keep two sizes: one for general work and one finer tip for the most delicate steps.

Care and Sterilization

Micro forceps tips are fine and bend easily. Use them on soft tissue only — never on wire, bone or needles. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
