What Is a Nasal Speculum?
A nasal speculum is an instrument with two blades that are placed in the nostril and spread apart to open it, so the doctor can see inside the nose with a headlight, mirror or endoscope. It is used for anterior rhinoscopy in the clinic and to hold the nose open during septoplasty, rhinoplasty and other nasal surgery.

Cottle Nasal Septum Speculums, 30 to 75mm Blades
Cottle nasal septum speculums have long, narrow blades that open the nostril and hold the septal mucosa aside, so the surgeon can see and work along the nasal septum.
The 50mm and 75mm models have ultra-thin 1mm tips that slide into narrow or swollen nasal passages with less trauma, and a thumb-screw lock that holds the blades open, so the speculum stays in place without being held. The 30mm model has short blades with smooth, rounded edges.
Choose the blade length by how deep you need to work: 30mm for the front of the septum, 50mm for most septal work and 75mm for deep access to the back of the septum.
- Cottle Nasal Septum Speculum 14cm, 50mm Blades, Ultra-Thin 1mm Tips
- Cottle Nasal Septum Speculum 14cm, 75mm Blades, Ultra-Thin 1mm Tips
- Cottle Nasal Septum Speculum, 30mm Blades
Hartmann and Hartmann-Halle Nasal Speculums
Hartmann nasal speculums are plier-type specula: squeezing the handles opens the blades and widens the nostril, so the front of the nasal cavity can be examined with a headlight or mirror.
They are the everyday nasal speculum of ENT clinics, used for anterior rhinoscopy, nasal packing, cautery, removing foreign bodies and treating nosebleeds.
Each is made in small, medium and large blade sizes, so you can match the speculum to the size of the nostril. The Hartmann-Halle pattern is a shorter 14cm version of the 16.5cm Hartmann.
- Hartmann Nasal Speculum 16.5cm — Small 30mm, Medium 33mm, Large 35mm
- Hartmann-Halle Nasal Speculum 14cm — Small 28mm, Medium 30mm, Large 35mm
Vienna and Tieck-Halle Nasal Speculums for Adults, Children and Infants
Vienna and Tieck-Halle nasal speculums are plier-type specula sized for different ages, from adults down to newborn babies, so the nostril is opened gently without stretching it.
The Vienna speculum is made in three blade sizes: adult 34mm, child 30mm and infant 24mm. The Tieck-Halle speculum has very short 18mm blades for babies and infants.
Paediatric ENT clinics, children's hospitals and neonatal units use these for nasal examination, suction and removing foreign bodies.
- Vienna Nasal Speculum 14cm — Adult 34mm, Child 30mm, Infant 24mm
- Tieck-Halle Infant Nasal Speculum 13cm, 18mm Blades
Killian and Cottle Long-Blade Nasal Speculums
Killian and Cottle long-blade nasal speculums have narrow blades from 35mm to 90mm long, which reach deep into the nose along the septum.
The longer the blade, the deeper the view. Short 35mm blades suit the front of the nose; 50 and 75mm blades suit most septal surgery; 90mm blades reach the back of the nasal cavity.
The Killian speculum is the classic pattern for submucous resection of the septum. The Cottle speculum is widely used in septoplasty and rhinoplasty.
- Killian Nasal Speculum 14cm — 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, 90mm
- Cottle Nasal Speculum 15cm — 35mm, 50mm, 75mm, 90mm
Thudichum Self-Retaining Nasal Speculums
Thudichum nasal speculums are small spring specula that sit in the nostril and hold it open by themselves, leaving both hands free.
The two blades are joined by a spring bow. Pressing the bow closes the blades for insertion; releasing it lets the blades open and hold the nostril wide.
They are used for examination, nasal packing, cautery and minor procedures in the front of the nose. Each pattern is made in three blade sizes, given as length x width.
- Goldsmith-Thudichum Nasal Speculum 6.5cm — 18.5 x 9.5mm, 21.0 x 10.5mm, 21.0 x 11.5mm
- Thudichum Nasal Speculum (Mark Hovell) 7.5cm — 16.5 x 9.0mm, 18.0 x 10.0mm, 19.5 x 10.6mm
How to Choose a Nasal Speculum
- Clinic examination: Hartmann or Hartmann-Halle, or a self-retaining Thudichum for hands-free work.
- Children and infants: Vienna child or infant size, or the Tieck-Halle infant speculum.
- Septoplasty and rhinoplasty: Cottle or Killian long-blade speculums; the Cottle septum speculums with 1mm tips for narrow or swollen passages.
- Blade length: 30–35mm for the front of the nose, 50–75mm for most septal work, 90mm for the back of the nose.
- Hands-free: the thumb-screw Cottle septum speculums and the Thudichum spring speculums stay open on their own.

Care and Sterilization
Clean the speculum straight after use, before blood and mucus dry on the blades. Open the blades fully, brush the inner faces and the joint or spring, rinse and dry. An ultrasonic cleaner can be used. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint or screw, then steam autoclave at up to 134°C. Check that the blades close evenly and the tips are smooth before each use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a nasal speculum used for?
To open the nostril for examining the inside of the nose (anterior rhinoscopy) and to hold it open during nasal surgery such as septoplasty and rhinoplasty.
What is the difference between a Killian and a Cottle nasal speculum?
Both have long, narrow blades for septal surgery. The Killian is the classic pattern for submucous resection; the Cottle is widely used in septoplasty and rhinoplasty. Both are made with 35 to 90mm blades.
Which nasal speculum is best for children?
The Vienna speculum in child (30mm) or infant (24mm) size, or the Tieck-Halle infant speculum with 18mm blades for babies.
What is a self-retaining nasal speculum?
A speculum that stays open on its own, like the Thudichum spring speculum or the Cottle septum speculum with a thumb-screw lock, so the doctor's hands are free.
Are these nasal speculums autoclavable?
Yes. All are German stainless steel and can be steam autoclaved at up to 134°C.
What is the minimum order quantity for bulk orders?
The minimum order is agreed per order, not fixed. Send the model codes and quantities you need through the wholesale request page and we confirm the minimum for that order.
Do you provide samples?
Yes. Samples are available on request and the buyer pays the shipping. Tell us the model codes you want to check.
Can I order a custom size?
Yes. Other tip lengths, tip widths and working lengths can be made on request. Send your specification through the wholesale request page and our production team will confirm.
