The thread holds the cannula metal to metal with no rotational play, so a directional cannula keeps the aim the surgeon set. The vent then decides how much suction reaches it: thumb down and the system is sealed at full vacuum, thumb lifted and air enters, dropping suction immediately.
Those two features work together rather than sitting side by side. On a directional cannula the surgeon is already thinking about which way the openings face; being able to take the vacuum off at the end of a stroke, or the instant the tissue changes, means the aim and the draw are both controlled from the same hand without looking away.
Both features need checking before a case. A worn or cross-threaded joint loses the rigidity, and a blocked vent quietly removes the control. Neither failure is obvious once the instrument is in tissue.
A handle is the link between the surgeon's hand and the cannula, and it changes three things: grip, force direction and the suction path.
Grip first. A cannula hub is a narrow collar meant for connecting, not for holding. Gripping it means pinching a small diameter with wet gloves for hundreds of strokes, which tires the hand and lets the instrument turn when it should not. A handle gives a body sized for the palm, so grip pressure stays light and the cannula holds whatever orientation the surgeon set.
Force direction second. Held by the hub, force is applied around the shaft and the cannula wanders off line as resistance changes. Held by a handle, force runs along the axis, so the tip goes where the handle points and long passes stay straight for less effort.
Suction path third, and this is where the versions differ. A handle can be a plain grip, it can carry a vent under the thumb so the surgeon modulates vacuum at the hand, and it can terminate in a male Luer lock so it connects directly into the tubing or syringe. Those are not cosmetic options: they decide who controls the vacuum and how many joints sit in the line.

The handle is made from German stainless steel with a passivated surface that resists corrosion through repeated cleaning cycles. It is reusable and can be steam autoclaved at 134°C. Flush the internal passage from both ends until the water runs clear, since aspirate passes through the handle as well as the cannula. Check the Luer thread for wear at every cycle: a worn thread leaks under vacuum, and a leak at the handle costs suction at the cannula where the surgeon cannot see it.

What does the thumb hole add to a threaded handle?
It vents the system. Covering the hole seals it and full vacuum reaches the cannula; lifting the thumb lets air in and suction drops at once. On a directional cannula it means the surgeon controls the aim through the rigid thread and the draw through the vent, both from the same hand.
Does this fit any liposuction cannula?
Match the handle to the cannula hub: Luer lock handles take Luer lock cannulas, threaded handles take cannulas made with a threaded fitting. A Toomey hub or a machine-specific hub does not use a handle of either type. Check the configuration line above for this handle.
