What Bent Left Blades Do

The blades turn to the left at the end of the shaft, for side cuts in the ear canal and middle ear, such as releasing adhesions or cutting a band that lies to the side. Which side is front or back depends on which ear is being operated on, so bent left and bent right scissors are normally bought as a pair.

The Bellucci pattern is also made straight (HM-BS-S40), bent up (HM-BS-UP40), bent right (HM-BS-R40).

About the Bellucci Pattern

The Bellucci pattern is the classic micro ear scissors: an 8cm working length with short 4mm blades.

Bellucci scissors are often called alligator scissors. The handle stays outside the ear and only the slim shaft and the small blades go into the ear canal, so the view down the microscope stays open while you cut.

The short 4mm blades make small, precise cuts. This is the everyday pair in most otology and tympanoplasty sets, and the pattern to buy first.

The same bent left blades also come as the Wullstein bent left (HM-WS-L40) and the Shea-Bellucci bent left (HM-SB-L80).

Care and Sterilization

Micro scissors blades are fine and lose their edge if misused. Cut soft tissue only — never wire, bone or needles. Store with the blades closed in a tip guard, and test the cut on a wet gauze strand: blunt scissors tear tissue instead of cutting it. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
