What a Wire Bending Forceps Does

In stapes surgery the fixed stapes is bypassed with a small piston prosthesis. Many of these prostheses hang from the incus on a thin wire loop. Once the piston is in place, the loop has to be closed gently around the incus so the prosthesis stays put without cutting into the bone.

A wire bending forceps is made for this one step. Its fine jaws hold the wire and bend it in a controlled way, so the loop closes evenly. It is used together with a prosthesis introducing forceps such as the Fuller Prosthesis Introducing Forceps.

Why a 6mm Tip

The 6mm tip is the longer of the two. The longer jaw reaches the wire loop with less of the instrument in the view, and gives a longer contact for an even bend.

The other size is the 3.5mm tip (HM-WB-35).

Care and Sterilization

Keep this forceps for wire work. Check that the jaws still close evenly, because a worn jaw bends wire unevenly. Clean the instrument straight after use, before blood and tissue dry on the tip. Use a soft brush and an ultrasonic cleaner, rinse, and dry fully. Put a drop of instrument lubricant on the joint before sterilizing. Steam autoclave at up to 134°C in a tray with a silicone mat or tip guard, so the fine tip never knocks against other instruments. Check the tip under magnification at every cycle.
